Michael Gaunt - Teacher

The Rivals – Regent University, Virginia USA

I have enjoyed many years teaching both here in the UK during my time as Principal of Birmingham School of Speech and Drama and Guildford School of Acting, and internationally in Russia, Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong and the United States.

I visited Regent University in 2004 at the invitation of the Department of Communication and Arts, to direct a number of acting workshops: Sheridan – ‘The Rivals’; Arthur Miller – ‘All My Sons’; and Shakespeare – Scenes of Passion (scenes from ‘Macbeth’, ‘Richard III’, ‘Measure for Measure’ and ‘Much Ado About Nothing’) and a Dickens acting workshop developing the characters from his novel ‘Hard Times’ and ‘The Rivals’ by RBS Sheridan. At Regent University I worked with MA and MFA students.

My special teaching interests are creating a Character utilising improvisation, text and camera utilising the Stanislavski and Michael Chekhov systems: taking into account the different needs of stage and lens; Scene Study; Nineteenth Century Repertoire; Eighteenth Century Repertoire; Seventeenth Century Repertoire; Creating a Character in Musical Theatre.

I continue to work as an External Examiner and currently I am examiner for the BA (Hons) Acting Course at the Kogan Academy of Dramatic Art (KADA) in London: validated by Kingston University.
